Interior Design Trends for 2023: 5 Looks We’ll See in Connecticut Homes
How we design our homes speaks volumes about who we are, how we spend our time, and what we value in our lives. Over the last few years, we’ve all spent a majority of our time at home, and we’ve seen dozens of trends come and go.
As a Connecticut realtor, yes, I can help you buy or sell your home, but I also have a love for designing and staging homes, too. Truth be told, I love anything related to interior design! Am I guilty of attempting a “coastal grandma” look in my living room? Yes, absolutely! But testing out different trends is the perfect way to find which styles actually suit you and your needs.
Although I typically prefer to stick with timeless, classic styles, I still love seeing what’s on track to trend for Connecticut homes and beyond. Here are 5 looks that we’ll be seeing a lot of, especially in and around Greenwich:
Statement Pieces
Pops of Color
Sustainable Design and Natural Materials
Patterned Wallpaper
Functional Wellness Spaces
Statement Pieces
From family heirlooms to elevated second-hand finds, we’ll start to see a shift in how we incorporate our personalities into our homes. As much as I love minimalist interior design, it can be slightly difficult to maintain with four kids (I’ll admit it).
Homes are meant to be lived in! Unless you’re one of the Kardashians, this year’s design trends are all about adding a cozy warmth and character. If your statement pieces are your kids’ one-of-a-kind Crayola masterpieces, then you’ve nailed this look.
The simplest way to incorporate unique pieces in your home is through decorative accessories: mirrors, light fixtures, rugs, sculptures, artworks, etc. If you’re in the market for local hand-crafted pieces, Greenwich is full of amazing artists and businesses to choose from!
Some of my favorite places to look are:
Pops of Color
Pantone’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, is a major signal that this year is all about including pops of color in your home. Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone, says that the choice is meant to encourage experimentation and self-expression, without limits. I can get behind that!
Aside from the very bright Viva Magenta, these are my personal color picks to start with:
Cobalt Blue
Terracotta / Burnt Orange
Emerald Green
Lavender
And remember: A pop of color goes a long way. If you aren’t careful with this one, you may end up living in a carnival funhouse. You can start with the current color palette of your home, and slowly add in elements that fit into it.
Sustainable Design and Natural Materials
Natural materials go hand in hand with sustainable design. Often, the use of natural materials in furniture design indicates better quality.
You’ll want to look for vintage, wooden furniture or recycled stone kitchen islands. The key to achieving the perfectly elevated eco-friendly design is to stay true to the material’s natural texture.
Now is the time to invest in your space! As fun as it is to participate in what’s trending, it’s equally as important to really evaluate what you are putting in your home.
Whenever I’m browsing through 1stdibs or window shopping on Greenwich Ave., I ask myself these questions: “Is a cheaper price worth losing better quality?” and “Will I still want this item in my home in a year? 5 years? 10 years?”
Patterned Wallpaper
If you know me, you know that I was beyond thrilled to see patterned wallpaper make the shortlist of design trends! I mean, I have an entire segment dedicated to Wallpaper Wednesday on my Instagram.
We’ll be seeing plenty of large-scale, organic patterns in Greenwich homes (trust me, this may be a new 2023 trend, but Connecticut residents have been hip to it for years!)
There’s a variety of ways to include wallpaper in your home – from an accent wall to an entire ceiling covering. When it comes to patterned wallpaper, specifically, it can be a little difficult to commit to an entire wall.
Choosing one area is a great place to start if you’re cautious about placement. I recommend one room in particular: The powder room.
Because this room is often tucked away, it’s perfect for experimenting with bold colors, patterns, textures, and other decor. I, for one, love the surprise of a somewhat eclectic powder room!
Functional Wellness Spaces
Like I said, homes are meant to be lived in, and plenty of us are doubling up on our time spent at home. By now, we’ve all created our designated work-from-home spaces, so this year there’s a new function to focus on: Wellness.
A wellness room can mean a few things – it depends on how you want to define wellness. Essentially, this room would be where you go to decompress after a long day at work.
If this means a home gym, then set up your Peloton or Mirror to get started.
If you’re interested in fine tuning an array of hobbies, then split your room into zones based on function. Include an area for reading, writing, crafting, etc.
The best part about this trend is that it is truly all about you. The main goal of a wellness room is to provide an escape of sorts, so fill yours with everything that you need to feel a sense of calm.
When your home represents who you are and fulfills what you need, then the job is done. This goes for interior design and real estate!
Once we’ve found your dream home, it’s time to fill it with your personality. Whether that’s a minimalist approach or a bold zebra-wallpaper-and-gold-finishes type of look, go for what makes your house feel the most like a home.
